The testimony of a web editor earning up to 2500$ per month

Jules, a web editor whose work I appreciate, offered to write an article to tell us about his job. Still little known, this job is attractive as it offers so many advantages. I'll leave it to Jules to tell you his story …

So, it all started when I was still at school when I had… ah okay, let's be short… So I decided to become a web editor when I was living in Russia. I had no more money in my pocket and to continue to live decently, I absolutely had to find a job.

In addition to giving French lessons to young students, I was hired in a marketing communications agency which asked me to translate websites . I immediately liked my new job because it gave me the chance to learn a lot of different things on a wide variety of subjects.

When I returned to France, I put this activity aside (serious mistake). But only a year later, the desire to write was once again imposed. Above all, I was looking for additional income from my job as a travel advisor at Havas and I came across an article that advised to become a web editor to make ends meet .

Very motivated by the formula, I immediately registered on the Textbroker platform . As I was employed during the day, I wrote in the evenings and on weekends. Very quickly, I understood that I wanted to professionalize my new activity as a web editor .

My first steps

In the beginning, you have to register on as many jobbing platforms or sites as possible to find your first clients. So, I signed up on Textbroker and Fiverr.

Very well evaluated by my customers, I quickly followed the articles. I often hear web editors criticizing this type of platform because they are paid too little, that it's a bit like the culture dig fair.

For my part, I have largely found my account with copywriting platforms. Even if I work there a little less today, they allowed me to learn the ropes, improve my style and have the right reflexes.

Yes, there were days when I earned less than 40 € for eight hours of work but today, thanks to my perseverance, my salary is much more interesting than when I was employed for the Havas travel agency. Now, I apply to websites in the themes that interest me … and it works! I am very satisfied with my job and can say that I have managed to find my way!

How is the day of a web editor?

I invite you to follow me for a day to understand the schedule of a web editor. It's a rainy day outside and it's Thursday. I love Thursdays, they often have lots of surprises to offer.

Start of the day: 9:25 a.m.
Many authors choose to start their day very early in the morning, sometimes even before 6 a.m. But not me, because I have a three-year-old who gets up at seven in the morning to go to school. And I only have two arms!

Every morning, I check my order book to find out which tasks to prioritize .

From Monday to Friday evening, I have a very specific list of work to do: client article to deliver, maintenance of my SEO sites, but also current projects for my company . I am also in partnership with web agencies that can outsource tasks to me … In short, the schedule is very busy …

Before I start writing, I also need to respond to my messages and prepare freshly received orders.

It's time to start writing the first text. I allow between 45 minutes and 2 hours (it all depends on the length of the text, the complexity of the article and my knowledge on the subject) for a blog post .

Then, I analyze my content strategy by researching the articles that have been published on the competing sites of my clients in order to predict and anticipate the topics that I will develop in the coming days.

At the end of my writing, I pass the text to Chinese with a spelling correction software (Cordial not to quote it) and I schedule the posts on social media (for the sites for which I have to ensure the community management) .

12 p.m. to 1:45 p.m.
It's lunch break time and I take this opportunity to work on my own websites. I do some SEO links, write a blog post or two for my satellite sites, and still reply to a few customer messages on my smartphone.

I also do some stretching. The job of web editor requires sitting for long hours and it ruins my back even if I have a great office chair . And if I want to get quality sleep and be in good shape at work, a little physical effort is necessary.

2:00 p.m.
After a light meal, I have to bring together all my energies and find concentration. I start by taking care of the less demanding activities and around 2:30 p.m., I resume my writing .

3:00 p.m.
This is the time when I regain my maximum concentration and I take the opportunity to write on complex subjects or I take the time to write guest articles like the one you are reading …

4:00 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.
During these 20 short minutes, I deliver my articles for the day and I respond to my messages once again . I stop my work at 4:20 p.m. because I have to pick up my boy from school. Afterwards, I prepare the snack and I play games with the little one. These little moments of relaxation allow me to release all the pressure of a busy day and it is also a real happiness!

8:45 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
The day is over, the little one is in bed and I don't write in the evening. I take this opportunity to watch TV and browse the web for my personal pleasure …

There you go, you know everything about the well-oiled program of the web editor that I am.

How did I learn the trade?

That's a great question: how do you become a professional web copywriter? To put it simply and schematically, there are as always two paths to follow to fill the skills gauge: the path to college or the path to training and experience. As far as I'm concerned, I chose the second path.

I have never taken a web writing diploma for the good reason that when I started to embark on this profession (nine years ago), there was no specific diploma.

In short, I had to learn everything by documenting myself on the internet and by participating in writing workshops . I also set up a private network of websites which allowed me to improve my know-how in programming, natural SEO and writing for the web.

Over the years, I have put my skills and my experience at the service of businesses by writing blog articles and offering SEO services .

The profession of web copywriter is constantly evolving, which is why I am always in continuous training . I attend copywriting training and attend SEO seminars.

What is my take on this trendy job?
Of course, this is only my personal opinion. The job of a web editor is interesting, rewarding and evolving . My clients always give me very different assignments and you have to learn how to be very inspired to create catchy and innovative content .
